3 Things You Should Know About Your Skin

We all want beautiful skin! But many times we reach for the bottle at the Walgreens, Macy’s, Nordstrom’s or whatever your best friend said “worked amazing”. How many magic potions and lotions have you bought that now sit in your bathroom junk drawer with old hair ties, crusty bobby pins, and the scrunchy that went out of style 20 years ago? This drawer of garbage would not exist if the products you were using actually worked.

So what do you need to know about YOUR skin…

1. We are NOT all the same. I know this does not come as a big surprise, but do you find yourself buying the same products that everyone else is using, but nothing is changing for your skin? That’s because we age differently. Some people age by sagging and loose skin, others may have irritated and red blotchy skin, or dry and wrinkled skin with age spots and even others continue to battle acne well after their teen years. Point being you may have one or two of these “types” of aging, but why would you buy the product that just says “anti-aging”. You do not fit into a box and neither does your skin, so why would you buy something that does not even address your concerns.

2. Not all products are created equal. This goes for everything in life. Ever notice how you love a specific brand of clothes because they last longer, or the tack that we use when we are out roping. Quality does make a difference. For example, it is a very common assumption that all Vitamin A Serums are the same, but if that were true I would not hear so many horror stories of how their skin reacted with a rash or caused major sun irritation. This all comes back to the quality of the ingredients and then how is the product formulated. How a skin care product is designed to penetrate into the skin is the secret to whether or not you will have any results and whether it ends up in that junk drawer of yours.

3. Many skin care lines cause inflammation to your skin. Well now that’s the craziest statement I have ever heard, except it is so true. My favorite commercials or ads are the ones for eye creams. “Miraculous results in just a few days.” “Look, all my wrinkles are gone.” Really? REALLY??? Well, here’s the scoop. Most skin care products on today’s market contain ingredients that cause inflammation and irritation. We continually buy these products that have fragrances, dyes, and preservatives that effects our skin’s immune system. Guess what happens next? Less time for your skin to repair and heal itself leading to pre-mature aging and thinning of the skin. I am always weary of instant results. When in life has “instant results” ever had long term positive changes? It is like popping a pill for weight loss, it only changes you in that moment but that weight always seems to go back on.

Our skin is priceless. It is the largest organ in our body and was designed to protect us. Instead, we are continually doing things to our skin for the instant fix without realizing there are long term consequences. We are all unique and so is how we take of our skin. What may work for one person may not be the best approach for you. With so many skin care lines to choose from it is tough to know what is worth investing in or what probably will be a complete waste of money and end up in the bottom of the drawer collecting dust. We can always buy another pair of blingy jeans, but our skin is irreplaceable. Invest in taking care of it properly and you will be amazed how people are more focused on how good you look versus what brand of clothes you have on that day.

Here's to Living Country. Beautifully.
